In a world with so many demands on our attention it’s easy to disconnect from the present moment. Beach yoga brings you back to your true nature.
I am lucky to have the white sand beaches of the Swedish Riviera only 10 minutes away from my home. Weather permitting, I teach Prana Yoga classes on the beach. It is so healing to sit among the sand dunes by the Baltic Sea, and practice beach yoga.
The ocean calls me to presence, the soft sand underfoot grounds me, and the kiss of the sea breeze silences my chattering mind.
The Endless Shoreline Of The Mind
Under an empty sky on an endless shoreline, I am only a dot in the landscape. At the same time, I am completely centered within myself. I am nothing and I am part of everything. Every breath is mirrored by the sound of ocean waves. Each yoga pose takes me into the expansive landscape, and back into this body.
Practicing beach yoga keeps me in the flow between outer and inner worlds. Stress and anxiety are a distant memory, and I easily fall into presence.
The Five Elements
The five elements are all experienced during the practice of beach yoga. The empty sky (space) gives me limitless room to practice within. The Sun (fire) is the only indication of passing time as shadows lengthen. The restless ocean (water) is the rhythm of the landscape. The sand (earth) is my connection to the resonance of our mother planet. The wind (air) moves around me and rushes away into the distance, so elusive. Each element is keenly felt.
We belong to the landscape. We need to be a part of it, not separated and insulated. Our connection with the elements, besides erasing the sense of separation from nature, deepens the inner experience. It is calming, balancing and healing.
The Serenity Of It All
Skåne is known for its serene, spacious landscape which provides room to breath, and to live a little more slowly. There is time to enjoy the passing moments with fewer pressures and expectations. It’s an environment perfectly suited for the mindful practice of Prana Yoga.
Prana Yoga is about unity of mind, body, and spirit. Practicing on the beach is a communion with nature, and amplifies the sense of unity. At play with the elements, you are connected to the earth, sea and sky. Everything moves within a great stillness.
Summary
Practicing yoga on the beach is a sanctuary from the chasing, busyness of modern life. Its very nature is freedom. You become part of something much bigger, and come to know your cosmic nature.
