What is Prana?

Explore the key aspects of this vital life force energy and how it flows through body, mind, and spirit.

Meaning of Prana
Prana is the Sanskrit term for “life force” or "vital energy". It is the subtle energy runs through our bodies and controls our emotional, mental, and physical health.
Role in the Body
Prana flows through energy channels called nadis and governs your vital functions such as breath, circulation, metabolism, immunity and wellbeing. It gives life, vitality and awareness.
Connection to Breath
Conscious breathing is the primary method to influence and harmonize prana. This is why pranayama (breathwork) is central to original yoga techniques and practices.
Levels of Prana
Yogic philosophy describes five main types of prana, each regulating different aspects of life, from movement and digestion to expression and renewal.
Spiritual Perspective
When your prana is balanced you will experience empathy, love, and higher spiritual awareness. Blocked or unbalanced prana can cause stress, fatigue, anxiety and disconnection.

What is Prana Yoga?

Explore the key aspects of this practice and how it supports mind, body, and spirit.

Goal
Improve physical, emotional, and mental well-being, and support spiritual growth by harnessing life force energy.
Core Techniques
Combines breathing techniques, meditation, and physical postures to cleanse and balance the body's energy centers (chakras).
Energy Focus
Highlights the connection between mind, body, and spirit, aiming to harmonize and manage the flow of prana (vital life force energy).
Benefits
Promotes inner peace, balance, vitality, and overall harmony, helping practitioners reconnect with themselves.

Balancing Prana Through Practice

Explore how different yogic practices balance and vitalize the flow of prana across body, mind, and spirit.

Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar)
A dynamic sequence that activates and circulates prana throughout the body. It harmonizes breath and movement, strengthens the nervous system, and balances solar (active) and lunar (receptive) energies.
Asanas
Physical postures that open the energy channels and release stuk energy. Steady, mindful asana practice increase breath awareness and activates the pranic flow. It builds stability, strenth and resilience.
Pranayamas
Breath control techniques regulate the movement of prana directly. They balance the energy centers, and restore equilibrium between body, mind and spirit.
Meditations and Visualizations
Through stillness and inner focus, meditation refines the vibration of prana. Visualization techniques help guide pranic energy toward healing, transformation, and expansion of consciousness.
Yoga Nidra
The deep relaxation of Yoga Nidra allows prana to redistribute and restore the system naturally. It releases mental and energetic blockages, supporting renewal at every level of beinf (Koshas).
Tibetan Rites of Tül Khor
An ancient series of dynamic movements and breath techniques that awaken dormant energy and balance the five pranas. These rites rejuvenate the body, strengthen emotional resilience, and promote inner luminosity.

What Are Pranayamas?

Discover how the ancient art of conscious breathing harmonizes energy, calms the mind, and creates the foundation for inner transformation.

Meaning of Pranayama
The Sanskrit word Pranayama combines prana (life force) and ayama (to expand or regulate). It refers to practices that control and direct the flow of life energy through the rhythm of breath, balancing body, mind, and spirit.
Purpose and Effect
Pranayamas help create a state where you feel both energized and grounded at the same time — the ideal inner condition for manifesting the life you want. By combining calming and activating breaths, the nervous system finds harmony, allowing clarity, focus, and vitality to emerge naturally.
Types of Pranayamas
Traditional practices include Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) for balance, Kapalabhati (skull-shining breath) for purification, and Bhramari (humming bee breath) for calming the mind and emotions. Each type refines prana in a unique way, supporting physical vitality and spiritual expansion.
The Role of Kumbhaka
Kumbhaka, or breath retention, is the heart of Pranayama. It is the still point between inhalation and exhalation — where the mind becomes quiet and prana gathers inward. In this moment of suspension, where energy is absorbed, purified, and redirected through the subtle channels (nadis). It opens up for deeper states of meditation and inner stillness. Kumbhaka transforms breathing into a spiritual practice by shifting awareness from the external breath to the inner space of consciousness.
Difference from Breathwork
Modern breathwork focuses mainly on the physical aspects of the body through active breathing patterns. Pranayama works on all layers of being — physical, mental, energetic, and spiritual. It refines awareness, awakens subtle energy, and prepares the mind for meditation and higher states of consciousness.
Spiritual Dimension
Through the control of breath, the yogi gains control over prana — and through prana, mastery of the mind. Regular practice awakens inner stillness, expands perception, and deepens the connection with the Self.

Conditions Prana Yoga and Yoga Therapy Helps to Prevent and Alleviate

Prana Yoga / Yoga Therapy restores flow and harmony across body, mind, and heart — naturally preventing and easing many modern imbalances.

Heartbreak & Emotional Turbulence
Prana Yoga opens the heart and calms the nervous system, helping practitioners let go of past relationships and emotional pain. Breath and gentle movement guide energy out of stagnation, inviting healing and emotional balance.
Bad Moods, Anxiety & Depression
Pranayamas, conscious breath, and grounding postures regulate the autonomic nervous system and improve brain chemistry. They ease anxiety, uplift low moods, and promote a sense of inner peace and optimism.
Physical Tension and Pain
Conscious stretching and mindful breathing open the body’s muscles, microfascia, and joints, and restores healthy blood flow. Releasing physical tightness helps relieve chronic pain and natural freedom of movement.
Poor Metabolism
Digestive breathing and twisting postures awaken the samana vayu — the energy governing digestion and assimilation. This helps improve metabolism, nutrient absorption, and energy balance throughout the body.
Unbalanced Blood Pressure
Deep breathing, relaxation and yoga nidra stabilize heart rate and circulation. They calm hyper tension and help the cardiovascular system return to its natural state.

Prana and Your Koshas

Discover how balanced or imbalanced prana influences the five layers of your being — from the physical to the spiritual.

Physical Layer (Annamaya Kosha)
Balanced Prana: The body feels vital, strong, and energized. Organs function smoothly, immunity is high, and healing is natural.
Imbalanced Prana: Fatigue, tension, poor circulation, or physical discomfort. The body feels heavy or depleted of energy.
Energetic Layer (Pranamaya Kosha)
Balanced Prana: Energy flows freely through the nadis, supporting clarity, vitality, and inner harmony.
Imbalanced Prana: Blockages or stagnation in energy flow cause restlessness, shallow breathing, or emotional instability.
Mental Layer (Manomaya Kosha)
Balanced Prana: The mind feels calm, focused, and emotionally stable. Thoughts are clear and positive.
Imbalanced Prana: Anxiety, distraction, overthinking, and emotional turbulence. The mind feels scattered or tired.
Intellectual Layer (Vijnanamaya Kosha)
Balanced Prana: Intuition, discernment, and inner wisdom are strong. Decisions come with clarity and confidence.
Imbalanced Prana: Confusion, lack of purpose, or disconnection from intuition. Difficulty seeing truth clearly.
Spiritual Layer (Anandamaya Kosha)
Balanced Prana: Deep peace, joy, and unity with life. Meditation feels natural and fulfilling.
Imbalanced Prana: Spiritual dullness or disconnection. Difficulty accessing stillness or a sense of inner bliss.

Prana Yoga and Brain Chemistry

Discover how Prana Yoga balances your inner energy and stimulates key brain chemicals that support focus, grounding, and love.

Regulation of the Nervous System
Prana Yoga harmonizes the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems through breath and awareness. This balance reduces stress hormones like cortisol and activates the body’s natural relaxation response. It enhances calmness, focus and emotional stability.
Focus and Clarity
Deep breathing and mindful asana practice increase oxygen supply and improve the function of the prefrontal cortex — the area of the brain responsible for attention and decision-making. This enhances the production of dopamine, promoting motivation, clarity, and joyful concentration.
Emotional Balance
By calming the mind through breath and gentle movement, Prana Yoga raises levels of serotonin and GABA — neurotransmitters linked to emotional stability and inner peace. This biochemical balance supports resilience and reduces stress and anxiety.
Feeling of Connection and Love
When the body is balanced and the nervous system calm, the heart naturally opens. Practices that include deep rhythmic breathing and meditation stimulate oxytocin — the “bonding hormone” associated with empathy, trust, and love. In Prana Yoga, love is not only an emotion but a state of alignment where energy flows freely and naturally.
Integration and Harmony
Over time, regular practice rewires the brain’s stress and reward pathways, promoting harmony between body chemistry and subtle energy. This integrated balance allows practitioners to stay centered, clear-minded, and open-hearted in daily life.
